LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe weather, including chances for tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and flash floods, is expected to hit Long Island Thursday.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center placed the region at an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms.
“Severe thunderstorms are likely with damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or higher, along with large hail as the primary threats,” a hazardous weather outlook for the area said. “An isolated tornado is also possible along with brief heavy rainfall.”
By the mid-to-late afternoon Thursday, strong storms are expected to pop up to our north and then move southeast through the evening, the weather service said.
The round of storms will end by early Friday, but another chance of showers and thunderstorms will return later that day.
On Saturday, the remnants of Hurricane Laura will hit the area. Up to 2 inches of rain may cause some minor flooding on the island, but no severe damage is expected.
