The Yankees will be carrying top pitching prospect Clarke Schmidt on their taxi squad to Baltimore for their weekend series with the Orioles, per The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler.
Now this doesn’t mean that Schmidt is set to pitch one of these games, but it is significant for the fact that the Yankees are bringing him from their Alternate Training Site in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to be available if they need to put him on the 40-man roster.
Schmidt, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, impressed during spring training and looked even better during summer camp at Yankee Stadium. However, he was cut from the squad and sent to the Alternate Training Site to be ready if need be.
With the Yankees’ bullpen faltering lately, Schmidt could provide a fresh arm that looked MLB ready against his teammates during intrasquad scrimmages as well as exhibition games prior to the start of the season. He features a plus fastball with good movement, a sharp curveball, and a changeup that dives down out of the zone around the low 80s on the radar gun.
But this is all speculative at the moment. Michael King and Deivi Garcia, two other top pitching prospects, will start in Game 1 and 2 respectively of the Friday doubleheader. Gerrit Cole will, then, start on Saturday.
Down the stretch with still many games to play, the Yankees could use someone to pick up the slack along this hunt for the postseason. Schmidt looked the part during summer camp, so he may get a shot in this series against the Orioles.
