The younger brother of former South Africa cricketer Vernon Philander has been shot dead near his home in Cape Town.
Tyrone Philander, 32, was murdered in the city’s west on Wednesday and the shooter is still on the run.
Local police said members of the Philander family were washing in the yard of their Ravensmead home when they heard gun shots.

Philander shared a statement on behalf of the family on Thursday (AEST) and asked for their privacy to be respected.
“Our family is coming to terms with the brutal murder in my hometown of Ravensmead earlier today. I would like to ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time,” he said.
“The murder is now the subject of a police investigation and we respectfully ask that the media give the police the space to conduct a thorough investigation. There are no details around the incident at the moment and speculation will make it very difficult for us as a family to mourn in peace.
“Tyrone is forever in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.”
Philander became one of the best Test fast bowlers of the past decade, taking 224 wickets for South Africa at 22.32 between 2011 and 2020.
He also featured in 30 ODIs, claiming 41 wickets at 24.04 before retiring from international cricket in January.
