The area boasts five singles players and four doubles teams that have qualified for the girls tennis district tournament this week, with one of each advancing as a sectional champion.
Ursuline’s Anna Morgione won the Division II singles sectional title on Saturday at Boardman with wins over third-seeded Marissa Landers of Cardinal Mooney, by a 6-1, 6-2 score, and over second-seeded Danielle Mendel of Struthers by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Morgione was the top seed.
She joins the Howland doubles team of Francesca Elisco and Kate Li who earlier in the week won the Division I sectional title at Solon, also as a No. 1 seed.
Both will face fourth-place finishers when they play this week in the district at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club in Akron. Division I comptition will be Thursday and Saturday, while Division II will play on Friday and Saturday.
Since each sectional tournament sent the top four finishers in both singles and doubles to the district, all participants in Saturday’s matches already had qualified and were playing for final placement.
Also at Boardman on Saturday, Landers defeated second-seeded Stella McConnell of Marlington, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in the third-place match. Mendel had beaten McConnell, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal round.
In doubles at Boardman, top-seeded Mary Mason and Elizabeth Mason of Marlington won the title match, 6-0, 6-0 over third-seeded Caitie Palusak and Julia Eich of Poland. Palusak-Eich upset top-seeded Lynn Chahine and Ella Kobak of Ursuline, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals. Mason and Mason won their semifinal match, 6-0, 6-0, over unseeded Ella Croyle and Emmah McConahy of Struthers. Chahine and Kobak won the third-place match, 6-2, 6-1.
In Division I at Canton, the remaining two local players met in a semifinal match. Third-seeded Ava Valko of Boardman won 6-3, 6-4 over second-seeded Anna Kan of Canfield. Valko then lost 6-0, 6-3 to top-seeded Tess Bucher of Hoover, while Kan won the third-place match, 6-1, 6-1 over fourth-seeded Rachel Kibler of Louisville.
