NBA could come calling fired Arizona basketball coach

What’s next for former Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller?

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski might have offered a glimpse into the coach’s future on Wednesday when he tweeted about how the NBA could come calling for Miller.

He tweeted: “Sean Miller’s immediate future is likely as an NBA assistant coach. At least one team expressed interest in the offseason, sources said, and now that he’s left Arizona, it’s expected Miller will move in that direction in the offseason.”

Miller was fired after 12 seasons in Tucson on Wednesday morning.

Miller’s contract hadn’t been extended since 2017, when the FBI announced its investigation into college basketball, of which Arizona played a prominent part.

The Wildcats went 17-9 overall and 11-9 this season, but were not eligible for the Pac-12 or NCAA tournaments due to a self-imposed ban.

More Arizona basketball:

Miller, 52, led the Wildcats to five Pac-12 regular season titles and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances since becoming the coach in April 2009.

He has no experience coaching in the NBA.

Prior to Arizona, he was the head coach at Xavier from 2004-2009.

He hasn’t been an assistant coach since 2003, when he was on Thad Matta’s staff at Xavier. Miller took over as head coach at the school when Matta left for Ohio State.

Miller did, however, send a lot of players to the NBA during his time in Tucson, giving him a lot of connections in the league.

After Arizona’s final game of the season, Miller said his team had a bright future.

“In the first two years with us in the Pac-10, we went 24-12,” Miller said after a loss to Oregon. “We kind of rebuilt and we sustained excellence.”

“Right now, 11-9 isn’t what anyone wants to sign up for moving forward. But I do think it’s a great bridge from a lot of things that have happened to a promising future, and we have some very good young players who are able to return that had outstanding seasons. And now we just have to meet with them.”

That future no longer includes Miller.

Does his future include the NBA?
